Summary

  • Replace pkg/errors / go-multierror usage in the root module with fmt.Errorf, errors.Is, and errors.Join.
  • Pin the module language version to go 1.26 (no patch pin) and drop the leftover pkg/errors require.
  • Add error-chain regression tests.

This PR is standalone against main (not stacked). If a sibling PR that touches the same files merges first, this branch may need a rebase.

Test plan

  • go build ./...
  • Root package tests

Replace pkg/errors and go-multierror with fmt.Errorf, errors.Is, and
errors.Join, tidy the root module to Go 1.26.5, and add error-chain tests.

Use the language version instead of a patch pin so consumers are not forced onto a specific toolchain patch.
Switch conn_test to stdlib errors. Is and remove the unused direct dependency.

3 tasks done
Keep go.work at 1.26.0 so submodule language requirements are satisfied,
and document Go 1.26+ in the README to match the root module.
