What does this PR do?

Registers Docker-compatible runtime providers before Docker host, socket, or client discovery. A selected provider initializes once per process and supplies separate client, daemon socket, published-host, and default-network settings. Unknown providers and failed managed endpoints return errors instead of falling back to host Docker.

Adds the optional github.com/testcontainers/testcontainers-go/modules/podman module. Importing it registers Podman; configuration selects it. Existing ProviderPodman calls and automatic Podman detection retain a built-in compatibility path during migration. ProviderPodman is deprecated, with removal deferred to a future breaking release.

Adds a core-only native Podman CI job on Ubuntu 24.04 for Go 1.26 and 1.27. Core or Podman module changes select it; it exercises the imported provider, the no-import migration paths, and Ryuk cleanup of orphaned containers, networks, and volumes. It uses temporary test imports without adding the optional module to core’s dependencies, disables test retries, and checks runtime selection after each test binary. Deletions and both sides of renames now participate in module detection, and the required end job verifies all expected jobs completed.

Native testing also fixes default-network discovery when Podman lists its native network under the Docker bridge alias. Provider-independent health and integration checks now honor the configured runtime. Tests account for Podman’s inspect formatting and documented API limitations.

Why is it important?

Runtime selection must happen before clients and Ryuk can be initialized, including through direct client constructors. An optional Go module can now prepare a runtime without adding its implementation dependencies to the core library. Containers continue to use the existing Docker-compatible implementation.

How to test this PR

  • CGO_ENABLED=1 go test -race -count=1 ./internal/core ./internal/config
  • CGO_ENABLED=1 go test -race -count=1 -run '^(TestProviderType|TestDockerClient|TestNewDockerClient|TestDockerProvider|TestDockerContainer)' .
  • CGO_ENABLED=1 go test -race -count=1 -run '^TestRuntimeProviderClient$' .
  • From modules/podman: CGO_ENABLED=1 go test -race ./...
  • Root, Podman module, and modulegen lint pass.
  • From modulegen: make generate, go run . refresh, and make tidy leave no additional changes; the refresh, Dependabot entry, and docs navigation tests pass.

Tests cover concurrent initialization, cancellation of individual callers without poisoning shared startup or discovery caches, cached initialization failures, missing registrations, explicit-selection precedence, early host/socket/client discovery, managed endpoint isolation from host TLS settings, and prevention of fallback to host Docker. Native Podman 4.9.3 passed the automatic and explicit no-import compatibility smoke tests and orphan cleanup. Native Podman 5.7 passed the targeted imported-provider networking, published-port, resource-limit, capability, provider-selection, and Ryuk tests. The complete core suite runs in the new GitHub CI job; local arm64 runs cannot execute the existing amd64-only authentication fixtures.

  • Reproduce the native core job with a configured rootful Podman socket: ./.github/scripts/test-core-podman.sh.
  • Workflow syntax, shell checks, module-detection cases, and required-job gate scenarios have been validated.

Follow-ups

After this PR merges, a separate PR against main will add an sbx provider using this interface and route Compose's additional clients to managed endpoints. The built-in Podman compatibility path remains until a separately announced breaking release.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an optional Podman provider, registered by importing its module and selected through configuration. Podman must be running before use.
    • Runtime selection now determines endpoint and host discovery. Selection is fixed after initialization, and Docker environment settings do not override a configured runtime endpoint.
    • Default network selection recognizes the configured bridge network before falling back to the existing default.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for registering and selecting the Podman provider, configuring endpoints, and migrating from existing Podman options. Existing compatibility paths remain available; ProviderPodman is deprecated.

Walkthrough

The change adds runtime-provider registration and connects selected runtime configuration to Docker endpoint discovery and client setup. It adds a Podman provider module, documentation, compatibility tests, and CI support. Provider-aware tests and changed-module detection are also updated.

Changes

Runtime Provider and Podman

Layer / File(s) Summary
Runtime registry and public API
internal/core/runtime_provider.go, runtime_provider.go, internal/core/runtime_provider_test.go
The registry adds provider registration, selection, shared initialization, and runtime configuration. The public package exposes provider types and registration. Tests cover registry behavior and endpoint discovery.
Runtime selection and Docker integration
provider.go, internal/core/client.go, internal/core/docker_host.go, docker.go, docker_client.go, runtime_provider_test.go, provider_test.go, testing.go
Provider selection and Docker setup use runtime configuration for endpoints, sockets, bridge networks, and published hosts. Client construction checks configured endpoints. Tests cover selection, endpoint discovery, and client behavior.
Podman module and adoption
modules/podman/*, docs/modules/podman.md, docs/system_requirements/using_podman.md, mkdocs.yml, .github/dependabot.yml, .vscode/.testcontainers-go.code-workspace, provider.go
The Podman module registers a provider that sets the default bridge network to podman. Documentation describes registration, selection, compatibility, and migration. Module metadata and repository navigation include the module.
Podman compatibility and reaper tests
podman_test.go, docker_test.go, image_test.go, mounts_test.go, network/network_test.go, reaper_cleanup_test.go, reaper_test.go, options_test.go, examples_test.go, logconsumer_test.go, reuse_test.go, from_dockerfile_test.go, image_substitutors_test.go
Integration tests cover Podman network selection, container behavior, and orphan cleanup. Existing tests use the selected default provider and account for Podman-specific behavior. Other tests adjust assertions and synchronization for runtime-specific outputs and timing.
Podman CI and module detection
.github/scripts/*podman*, .github/workflows/ci-test-go.yml, .github/workflows/ci.yml, commons-test.mk, scripts/changed-modules.sh, scripts/changed-modules_test.sh, scripts/check_environment.sh
CI adds Podman setup and test paths, validates selected job results, and tests changed-module detection across changed paths. Shared test settings support configurable flags and output files.
