What and why

Form control paths escape . and \ in keys (#239), but an empty key was written as nothing at all. A control keyed '' at the root of a form, as in new FormGroup({ '': ctrl }), got the path '', the same as the form itself, and splitPath('') reads that back as the root. A child b under an empty key got the path b, as if it sat at the top level.

As a result, the panel and agent tools listed the control with the root's path, and every forms action aimed at it was applied to the whole form instead (mark-touched, set-value, reset, enable, store-as-global and so on). Empty keys are rare, but when there is one, actions quietly go to the wrong place.

The fix:

  • writes an empty key as \e, and splitPath reads \e back as an empty segment. A real backslash is always written \\, so this can't clash with a real key, and paths with no empty keys don't change.
  • makes store-as-global quote an empty Signal Forms key ($form['']) instead of writing $form.
  • adds one sentence on the escape to the forms docs page, next to the existing note on \. and \\

How it was verified

  • forms-dotted-keys.test.ts: a real reactive FormGroup with '' and other controls, run through the real collector and runFormAction. On main the empty-key control's path is '', and mark-touched marks the form rather than the control. With the fix it has its own path, and mark-touched, set-value and store-as-global reach only that control.

  • forms-path.test.ts: round trips for [''], ['', ''], ['', '', 'a'] and ['a', '', ''].

  • All 3 new tests fail on main and pass with the fix.

  • pnpm commit:check (commit messages follow the guidelines)

  • pnpm format:check

  • pnpm typecheck (includes the ngc template checks)

  • pnpm test:devtools (all passing)

  • pnpm skills:check (when .claude/ changed): not changed

  • Docs in apps/docs updated (the path escape sentence in inspectors/forms.md)

  • pnpm extension:build and extension/ui committed (when app/ changed): not changed

  • Checked in the browser with axe (when the UI changed): no UI change

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed how DevTools identifies and accesses form controls with empty keys. These controls remain distinct from the form root, resolve to the correct control, and can be updated or marked touched without affecting sibling controls or the entire form. Path handling and stored expressions now preserve empty keys correctly.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how form paths represent empty keys, literal dots, and backslashes, and noted that the panel and tool output use the same escaped representation.

A control keyed '' at the root of a form got the path '', the same as the
form itself, and anything nested under an empty key lost a level. Forms
actions aimed at that control (mark touched, set value, reset, store as
global) were applied to the whole form instead. An empty key is now
written `\e`, which splitPath reads back as an empty segment. A real
backslash is always escaped as `\\`, so this cannot clash with a real key.
Paths without empty keys are unchanged.

Path utilities now distinguish empty keys from the root path. Signal Form expressions use bracket-key notation for empty path segments. Tests cover path round-trips and operations on controls with empty keys.

Changes

Empty-key form paths

Layer / File(s) Summary
Encode and decode empty path segments
packages/devtools/src/forms-path.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/forms-path.test.ts
Path encoding uses \e for empty keys while retaining existing escapes for nonempty keys. Tests cover empty keys at the root and within paths.
Resolve and operate on empty-key controls
packages/devtools/src/forms-actions.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/forms-dotted-keys.test.ts, apps/docs/src/content/inspectors/forms.md
Signal Form expressions use bracket-key notation for empty segments. Tests verify path resolution, control updates, and global storage. Documentation distinguishes the empty-key marker from the whole-form path.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 7feb0

The new empty-key notation displays as intended. The inaccurate rendering of the older escape examples is unrelated to this change.

Review details

Systems and components

  • observed — packages/devtools (library) was modified; 4 changed files map to changed impact.
  • observed — apps/docs (service) was modified; 1 changed file maps to changed impact.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in packages/devtools/src/tests/forms-dotted-keys.test.ts: Added an EmptyKey form fixture containing empty-string and other controls, with inputs bound to each.
  • observed — Modified behavior in packages/devtools/src/tests/forms-dotted-keys.test.ts: Added tests asserting the empty-key control has a non-root path that round-trips through controlPathOf and nodeAt; marking it touched and setting its value affect only that control, and storing it globally produces $form.get('') and assigns that control to $control.
  • observed — Modified behavior in packages/devtools/src/tests/forms-path.test.ts: Added expectations for distinguishing a lone empty key from the root, preserving empty keys through childPath, and round-tripping paths with leading, trailing, or consecutive empty segments.
  • observed — Modified behavior in packages/devtools/src/forms-actions.ts: Signal Form expressions now use bracket-key notation for empty path segments as well as segments containing . or \.

## Agent tools

`form` is a form id like `Checkout.form@ab12`, or part of its label. `path` is a dotted field path, like `address.city`. A literal dot in a control key is written `\.` and a literal backslash `\\`, so the control keyed `a.b` has the path `a\.b`. The panel and the tool output show the same escaped form.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Put the escape spellings in inline code.

Markdown treats backslashes before punctuation as escapes. As written, \. renders as . and \\ renders as \, so readers do not see the documented path syntax. Wrap the escape spellings and path example in inline code.
