Adds a remote block-device write head under remote/ for streaming reads and writes into remote systems. Framing is transport-independent and currently validated over SSH, with room for future TCP/U-Boot integration.

Summary

  • Implement DATA, ZERO, READ, SEEK, SYNC, SIZE, and QUIT with framed responses and progress records.
  • Errors are fatal: the write head reports ERR and exits. The client treats every ERR as fatal, so there is no post-error recovery in the write head.
  • ZERO writes locally using an 8-byte length payload, avoiding transfer of the zero-filled content.
  • SIZE (0x0a) returns total device bytes as a little-endian u64 in a SIZE response (0x89), without moving the cursor. It reuses the size measured at open and reports ERR if that measurement failed.
  • Document client preflight using the image's expanded size and intended write offset to check available device capacity before writing.
  • Support QNX aarch64 cross builds and native builds; publish both binaries through CI.
  • Use explicit SYNC for durability (fdatasync on QNX, fsync on macOS).

mangelajo and others added 4 commits October 9, 2026 11:26
Runs on a remote host, opens a raw block device (e.g. /dev/emmc0), and writes framed
commands to it over stdin/stdout.

the remote counterpart of the local O_DIRECT writer (SYNC = fdatasync; fsync on macOS).
Builds as flswh-aarch64-qnx7 (cross) and flswh-<arch>-<os> (native);

CI runs it first and keeps both binaries as artifacts for later fls testing.

- drain remaining DATA payload after device write error (stream desync)
- emit() uses write_all() to handle partial stdout writes over SSH
- guard against malformed DATA frames with plen < 8
- read_all() returns ssize_t instead of int
- bump disk write chunks from 64 KiB to 8 MiB (WRITE_CHUNK_SIZE, compile-time)
- test.py uses tempfile instead of hardcoded /tmp paths

Assisted-by: OpenCode
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The failed chunk is already read from the stream when the write fails,
so drain (size - rd) + 4 based on bytes read, not bytes written.

ZERO (0x09, len:u64) writes zeros from the current offset without
sending bytes over the wire. CRC32 base table and per-byte update
copied from gityf/crc (Wang Yaofu, Apache-2.0), adapted to a running
state; verified against zlib in test.py.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds fls-wh, a framed-command program that reads and writes a raw block device. It adds native and QNX AArch64 builds, integration tests, and CI checks that upload both binaries.

Changes: Remote write head

Layer / File(s) Summary
Framed device protocol
remote/fls-wh.c, remote/test.py, remote/README.md
fls-wh handles framed device commands and responses. Integration tests cover writes, reads, seeking, zeroing, synchronization, and error paths. The README documents the protocol, build targets, and test command.
QNX runtime and build
remote/include/*, remote/start.S, remote/stubs/*, remote/Makefile, remote/Containerfile, remote/.gitignore
Adds QNX system declarations, startup code, and a libc stub generator and manifest. Make rules build QNX and native binaries; the container provides build tools.
Repository build and CI
Makefile, .github/workflows/ci.yml
Adds repository-level build targets. CI builds both binaries, checks QNX ELF metadata, runs the native integration test, and uploads the binaries.

Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Set a timeout for the compiler subprocess.

If the compiler hangs, this new build step blocks the test indefinitely. Add a bounded timeout here and to the earlier compiler call at Line 64. subprocess.run will then fail the test with TimeoutExpired.

Based on learnings: subprocess calls without timeouts can block indefinitely.

SKIP is not used by the fls client and is covered by SEEK (seek to
cur + len). Remove it from the protocol, the write head, and the
native test (the offset-advance coverage is kept via SEEK).

Assisted-by: OpenCode
Co-Authored-By: Qwen 3.8 27B <noreply@qwen.ai>
The fls client treats every ERR as fatal, so the write head's
post-error recovery (draining the frame, re-seeking the fd back to
the logical cursor) is dead weight. Report the error and exit:

- DATA: drop the drain and re-seek after a failed write
- ZERO / READ: drop the re-seek
- malformed frames: drop the drain
- skip() has no callers left; delete it

The native fault-injection test now runs each fault in a fresh
process and checks the exact READY/ERR/DONE sequence.

335-341: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Consider rejecting out-of-range writes on known-size block devices.

DATA and ZERO do not compare the requested range with cur and sz. If a block device accepts the prefix up to its capacity and then returns an error, the request can modify that prefix before ERR terminates the write head. The README assigns this capacity check to the client, so this is defense in depth rather than a protocol violation.

If adding the guard, apply it only when sz >= 0 and use an overflow-safe comparison such as cur <= size && len <= size - cur. Do not use cur + len > sz directly because sz is signed and size measurement can fail. Preserve regular-file behavior, since the native test uses a temporary regular file and regular files can extend past EOF.

Stage the complete payload in the existing 8 MiB buffer, validate the
trailing CRC, and only then write to the device: a corrupt chunk no
longer leaves bytes behind. Cap a single DATA at the staging buffer
size (8 MiB, matching the client's cap) so the cap check is also a
memory-exhaustion guard. Error-record behavior is unchanged: malformed
frames, read failures, CRC mismatches, and write failures all report
ERR and exit.

The native test now covers a CRC mismatch (device left untouched) and
an oversized DATA (rejected before staging).
