HACS is built into Home Assistant as the Marketplace, starting with Home Assistant 2026.11, and its development continues there. The HACS backend in [hacs/integration](https://github.com/hacs/integration) is no longer developed.

- How to get started.
- What branch to target.
- How to test locally.

## Finding the backend repository

The backend repository is hosted @ https://github.com/hacs/integration

## Target branch for contributor PRs

When contributing to the backend, target your PR against the `main` branch.

## Creating your code changes using the devcontainer

1. Spin up the [devcontainer](/docs/contribute/devcontainer.md).

2. Add your code changes.
3. To start a preview of the application, issue the following command:

```bash
scripts/develop
```

- You have now started a local instance of Home Assistant with HACS on `http://localhost:8123`

- To use and see HACS inside the local Home Assistant instance, you need to [configure it in the Home Assistant UI](/docs/use/configuration/basic.md)

4. When you are happy with the result, push the changes to your fork and create a PR to have it merged to the HACS base.
To work on the Marketplace, see the [Home Assistant contributor documentation](https://contributors.home-assistant.io/). The integration lives in [home-assistant/core](https://github.com/home-assistant/core), as `homeassistant/components/marketplace`.

[The easiest way to contribute, is to spin up a devcontainer](https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/devcontainers/containers) with Visual Studio Code (VS Code). It has all the tools you need included, and it does not interfere with your system.

**Requirements:**
HACS is built into Home Assistant as the Marketplace, starting with Home Assistant 2026.11, and its development continues there. The HACS development environment is no longer maintained.

- [git](https://git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Getting-Started-Installing-Git)
- [Docker](https://docs.docker.com/get-docker/)
- [VS Code](https://code.visualstudio.com/docs)
- Remote - Containers (VS Code extension)

**Open a cloned repository:**

1. [Fork](https://git-scm.com/book/en/v2/GitHub-Contributing-to-a-Project) [the HACS repository](https://github.com/hacs) that you want to contribute to.
2. [Clone](https://git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Git-Basics-Getting-a-Git-Repository) the repository to your computer.
3. Open the repository using VS Code.

When you open this repository with VS code, you are asked to **Reopen in Container**. This starts the build of the container.

_If you don't see this notification, open the command palette and select **Remote-Containers: Open Folder in Container**._
To work on the Marketplace, see the [Home Assistant contributor documentation](https://contributors.home-assistant.io/), which also explains how to set up a development environment.

First spin up the [devcontainer](/docs/contribute/devcontainer.md)

When you have that, the following command:

Once that is done you can attach this development frontend to a development integration instance by using the `-f` flag for the integration develop script.

```bash
To handle submissions of translated strings we are using [Lokalise](https://lokalise.com) they provide us with an amazing platform that is easy to use and maintain.
To help out with the translation of HACS you need an account on Lokalise, the easiest way to get one is to [click here](https://lokalise.com/login/) then select "Log in with GitHub".
When you have created your account [click here to join the HACS project on Lokalise](https://app.lokalise.com/public/854515055f679055040b37.42677693/).
If you are unsure of how to proceed, their documentation is really good, and you can [find that here](https://lokalise.com/en/). Or send me a message @ [discord](https://discord.gg/apgchf8) (username: `ludeeus#4212`)
Before each release new translations are pulled from Lokalise, so if you have added something look for it in the next version of HACS.
If you add elements to the UI of HACS that need translations, update the [`en.json`](https://github.com/hacs/frontend/blob/master/src/localize/languages/en.json) file, when your PR is merged, those new keys will be added to Lokalise, ready to be translated.
HACS is built into Home Assistant as the Marketplace, starting with Home Assistant 2026.11. Its texts are now translated together with the rest of Home Assistant, so the HACS project on Lokalise is no longer used.
To help translate, see [translating Home Assistant](https://contributors.home-assistant.io/translate/).
title: HACS and the Marketplace
description: "Starting with Home Assistant 2026.11, HACS is built into Home Assistant as the Marketplace. What that means for you."
---
Starting with Home Assistant 2026.11, HACS ships with Home Assistant itself, as the **Marketplace** integration. You find it under **Settings** > **Marketplace**. There is nothing to download anymore.
The Marketplace is HACS, brought into Home Assistant: the same catalog, the same repositories, and the same `hacs.json`. Development continues in Home Assistant, so HACS itself, the custom integration, doesn't get new features anymore.
## What this means for you
| You | Where to go |
| --- | --- |
| Use HACS on Home Assistant 2026.10 or older | Keep using HACS. The [user documentation](/docs/use/index.md) on this site still applies. Before you upgrade, read [Upgrading to Home Assistant 2026.11](#upgrading-to-home-assistant-202611). |
| Use Home Assistant 2026.11 or newer | The [Marketplace documentation](https://next.home-assistant.io/integrations/marketplace/). |
| Publish a repository | The [Marketplace publishing documentation](https://contributors.home-assistant.io/marketplace/). Getting into the catalog still works the same, through [hacs/default](https://github.com/hacs/default). |
| Want to contribute code | The [Home Assistant contributor documentation](https://contributors.home-assistant.io/). |
## Upgrading to Home Assistant 2026.11
You don't need to do anything. When Home Assistant starts after the update, the Marketplace takes over from HACS:
- Everything you downloaded with HACS stays installed, and keeps getting updates.
- Your custom repositories and update entities carry over, with their names, areas, and labels. The update entities keep their entity IDs, so automations and dashboards that use them keep working.
- HACS itself is removed. Bookmarks to `/hacs` open the Marketplace.
A few things work differently:
- The Marketplace is under **Settings**, not in the sidebar. The HACS options, like the sidebar title and icon, are gone.
- AppDaemon apps and Python scripts are no longer managed. Their files stay where they are and keep working, but they don't get updates anymore. A repair tells you which ones this concerns.
- Dashboard resources are served from `/local/community/` now. The old `/hacsfiles/` paths keep working. If you configured resources in YAML, a repair reminds you to change them.
- HACS can't be installed on Home Assistant 2026.11 or newer. Home Assistant blocks the custom integration, because the Marketplace replaces it.
The [Coming from HACS](https://next.home-assistant.io/integrations/marketplace/#coming-from-hacs) section of the Marketplace documentation has all the details, including what changes for templates and custom tools that use HACS.
## What stays here
- **The catalog.** The list of repositories everyone sees is still [hacs/default](https://github.com/hacs/default), and the Marketplace reads the same data HACS does. Submitting a repository works as before.
- **The checks.** The [HACS action](/docs/publish/action.md) and the [checks for the catalog](/docs/publish/include.md) are documented in the publishing section of this site.
- **HACS before 2026.11.** The user documentation and the FAQ on this site describe HACS, for everyone who hasn't upgraded yet.
## Feature requests and bugs
- **Feature requests and ideas:** the [Marketplace category](https://github.com/orgs/home-assistant/discussions/categories/marketplace) of the Home Assistant discussions.
- **Bugs in the Marketplace:** the [open Marketplace issues](https://github.com/home-assistant/core/issues?q=sort%3Aupdated-desc+is%3Aissue+state%3Aopen+label%3A%22integration%3A+marketplace%22) in the Home Assistant core repository. Open a new one there if yours isn't reported yet.
- **Bugs in something you downloaded:** the repository of that integration, card, or theme.
