Using this space to make a few notes about upgrading the toponym pages.
In tems of layout, would it be possible to move everything that's currently on the lefthand side of the page (line codes, map, name equivalents, and lat/long coords) over to the right, and everything that's currently on the right (MS-by-MS list of variants) over to the right?
My ideal order for the lefthand column would be:
Toponym name
Name variants:
1. Ancient name (if available)
2. Modern name and country (if available)
Description (NEW INFO)
Lat/Long coords
WHG link (NEW INFO, equates to "authority file" in current interface)
1. Should we show the link URL, or merely provide a standard text like See this place in the World Historical Gazetteer ⬀ that's a clickable link?
(Could this have a ? icon that brings up a pop-up explaining what the WHG is and why you might want to click on it?)
Line code reference(s):
1. Heading currently reads: The toponym XXX is mentioned in La Sfera on the follow line codes:
Please change to: The toponym XXX appears in La Sfera in the following places: ( Laura IngallinellaLaura is there a better way to phrase that?)
If there are no line codes available , i.e. it's an M#, a sentence appears reading No line codes available for this toponym
Please change to: This toponym does not appear in the poem, only on the maps accompanying it.
Instruction below reads Click on any line code to view it in context within the text.
Please change to: Click on any citation to view it in context in the edition.
MAP
I kind of love the idea of mimicking Pleiades and listing a suggested citation for the page at the bottom—how easy is this? Example from Pleiades:
Suggested citation:
D.J. Mattingly, R. Talbert, Sean Gillies, Tom Elliott, and Jeffrey Becker, 'Cyrenaica (region): a Pleiades place resource', Pleiades: A Gazetteer of Past Places, 2024 https://pleiades.stoa.org/places/373777 [accessed: 27 January 2026] Here is a sample of what the cleaned-up data will look like. (The toponym<->citation data is in a separate spreadsheet.) We should have URLs for the WHG links (column I) within a couple of weeks; I am hoping to have the descriptions finished and the rest of the data cleaned up by then as well.
