Fixes #167

fpcalc crashes (SIGSEGV in swr_convert) on files whose AC-3 5.1 stream contains
isolated stereo frames. The converter is set up once in Open() from the stream's
channel layout, but Read() passes every decoded frame to swr_convert() without
checking that the frame still matches. On a stereo frame in a 5.1 stream,
data[2..5] are NULL, so swr_convert() reads through a NULL pointer.

Change

  • Record the channel count the converter was configured with in Open().
  • In Read(), drop any frame whose channel count differs, or that has a NULL
required data plane, instead of passing it to swr_convert().
  • Count the dropped frames and have fpcalc print a warning to stderr when any
    were dropped. Stdout is unchanged.

Dropping a frame loses 32 ms of audio for an AC-3 frame, so audio after it is
that much earlier in the fingerprint. Reinitialising the SwrContext when the
layout changes would be the alternative; I went with dropping because it is the
smaller change. Happy to rework it if you prefer.

Not covered: sample format or sample rate changing mid-stream, and a different
layout with the same channel count (for example 5.1 vs 5.1(side)).

Testing

Built from current master against FFmpeg 8 (Lavc62.11, SwR6.1).

  • A Matroska file with an AC-3 5.1 stream and a stereo frame as its first frame:
fpcalc -raw -length 300 crashed before and now exits 0 with a fingerprint
    and "dropped 1 audio frame(s)".
  • Across 50 files of that kind, -length 300 and -length 900 produced no
crashes after the change. Without it, 8 of the 50 crashed at 300.
  • On files with no such frames, the output is byte-identical to the unpatched
    build.

I don't have a sample file I can attach (commercial recordings). There is no
automated test for this change because the existing tests don't cover
FFmpegAudioReader with real container files.

Walkthrough

FFmpegAudioReader now skips decoded frames that do not match the converter’s channel and sample-plane requirements. It tracks the number skipped, and fpcalc warns with that count and the input file name.

Changes

Audio frame handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate and count frames
src/audio/ffmpeg_audio_reader.h
The reader records the converter’s input channel count and checks each frame’s channel count and required sample planes before conversion. It counts mismatches, clears the output data and size, and resets the count when Open succeeds.
Report dropped frames
src/cmd/fpcalc.cpp
ProcessFile warns with the dropped-frame count and input file name when the count is greater than zero.

The change prevents the reported AC-3 crash in the conversion path. Similar mismatched frames can still cause invalid memory reads in two less common cases: input that needs no conversion, and audio with more than eight channels. Fix both cases, or explicitly accept the risk, before merging.

Validate channel changes on the direct-audio path.

When Open needs no converter, this guard does not run. A decoded frame with fewer channels can then reach the direct m_frame->data[0] path. ProcessFile feeds that buffer using the stream channel count, which can read beyond the frame's audio data. Apply the channel and data validation before either output path. (ffmpeg.org)

Pass the plane array that the validator checks.

For planar audio with more than eight channels, extended_data contains the additional planes. This loop can accept those planes, but Read passes m_frame->data to Convert. The converter can still read beyond that eight-pointer array. Pass extended_data to Convert, with the same fallback used here. (ffmpeg.org)

Thanks for the PR, and for the very detailed report in #167. The backtrace and the ffprobe steps made it easy to reproduce with a synthetic file.

I went with reinitialising the converter in #168 rather than dropping frames. When a frame's format, sample rate or channel layout differs from what the converter was set up with, the old converter is flushed and a new one is built for the frame. No audio is lost, so the rest of the fingerprint stays aligned. This also covers the cases you listed as out of scope here (sample format or rate changes, and a different layout with the same channel count), and the path where no converter is used at all. #168 also adds a regression test with a small generated 5.1 → stereo → 5.1 AC-3 file.

I'll close this one in favour of #168. If you get a chance to run your 50 files through that branch, I'd be glad to hear how it does. You have far more real-world samples of this than I do.
