Ref #3377, split from #3563.

Verifies downloaded update installer Authenticode signatures on Windows before triggering quitAndInstall() (RFC #3377 Part B):

  • Signature Verification: Invokes PowerShell's Get-AuthenticodeSignature via execFile with -NoProfile and -NonInteractive.
  • Exact Status Match: Requires stdout.trim() === 'Valid' before proceeding.
  • Fail-Closed: If downloadedFile is missing or verification fails, deletes the installer (fs.unlinkSync), dispatches an update error, and halts installation.
  • Platform Scope: Bounded strictly to Windows (process.platform === 'win32'); non-Windows platforms proceed directly to install.

Verification

  • yarn test src/updates/main/setupUpdates.main.spec.ts: 12/12 passed (including Windows valid, tampered, missing file, and non-Windows skip cases)
  • yarn lint: 0 errors
  • yarn build: 29 chunks scanned and passed

Scope & Risk

  • Skipped: Does not verify certificate thumbprint pinning against specific Rocket.Chat leaf certs; relies on OS trust store validation via CryptoAPI.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security
    • Windows updates are now checked for a valid digital signature before they’re marked as downloaded. Updates with a missing installer or an invalid signature are reported as errors, and an installer that fails verification is removed.
    • Signature verification does not apply on other platforms.

Walkthrough

The update handler now checks downloaded update files on Windows for a valid Authenticode signature. If the path is missing or verification fails, it dispatches an error instead of continuing the downloaded-update flow. On verification failure, it attempts to remove the file. Tests cover Windows and non-Windows behavior.

The platform-dependent test failure has been fixed, and normal Windows update events provide the path needed for signature verification. No identified issue blocks merging.

against the expected publisher identity before allowing the installer to pass.

platform-independent by stubbing process.platform to win32 in beforeEach and
restoring its original property descriptor in afterEach. Add a non-Windows case

Hi @jhaabhijeet864, thank you for looking into update integrity! This review found a real gap.

electron-updater already verifies the signature of NSIS updates, but only when publisherName is set. The electron-builder 26 upgrade removed that setting from electron-builder.json. So today the built-in check stops before it verifies anything (NsisUpdater.verifySignature returns early when publisherName is missing).

Could you change this PR to restore win.signtoolOptions.publisherName, instead of a second PowerShell check? That has these advantages:

  • It pins our publisher. The current check accepts a valid signature from any publisher.
  • It does not stop all updates on machines where PowerShell is restricted (AppLocker or Constrained Language Mode). The current check removes every download on those machines.
  • It does not show an error dialog that the user cannot act on.

We can help you find the correct certificate subject for the value. Thanks!

Much Appreciated @jeanfbrito ! 🫡 Honestly, this is exactly the kind of 'best code is no code' solution I was aiming for earlier. Relying on electron-updater's native pinning and avoiding the PowerShell/AppLocker edge cases seems the right call. I missed that publisherName got dropped in the v26 upgrade.

I'll revert the custom PowerShell implementation right away. If you can share the exact certificate subject/publisher name, I'll plug it into electron-builder.json and push the updated commits!
