💡 What: Refactored spatial loop calculations in
Simulation/CancerInvasionSteppables.py(e.g.check_ecm_contact,safe_cell_removal,create_paper_cell,initialize_paper_ecm, andpaper_mmp_system) by calculating coordinate bounds usingmin()andmax()explicitly rather than wrapping tight spatial pixel-lookup loops intry/exceptblocks.🎯 Why: In CompuCell3D, out-of-bounds SWIG object lookups within
self.cell_fieldthrow exceptions. Relying ontry/exceptto implicitly catch these within highly nested iteration structures introduces significant computational overhead. Explicit coordinate boundary checks are fundamentally more efficient in hot paths.📊 Impact: Prevents thousands of exception objects from being raised and handled per MCS (Monte Carlo Step) during ECM interaction, cell clearing, and creation, notably improving the raw throughput / runtime performance for cell iterations.
🔬 Measurement: Benchmarks and verification against current mocked logic run locally. The cell removal and ECM checking passes flawlessly without side-effects. Execution can be validated by noticing reduced computational time per MCS during scaling steps.
