AI Chat with Claude (new in 3.7 pre-release)

In latest pre-release I've added a chat sidebar where you can ask questions about the PDF or image you're reading.

Answers come from Claude Code running locally on your machine — SumatraPDF launches the claude CLI when you send a message. Your files are not sent to SumatraPDF servers.

Open the panel with View → Claude chat, or Ctrl + K and search for AI Claude chat with document.

Each document tab has its own chat session. You can resume previous sessions from the session dropdown, pick model and effort level, and drag the splitter to resize the sidebar.

Works for PDF and single image files. Requires Claude Code to be installed (see setup guide).

First! Thanks for all the hard work and great software!

I have a negative opinion about this "ai" stuff. I don't want to engage in debate about it, just keep it off my computer and keep my docs private. I appreciate that you are implementing it that way. It's part of what I like about Sumatra, as opposed the more popular PDF software. Maybe to make it feel even more comfortable, make the "ai" a plugin that I don't have to install. Or a global opt out like in Firefox.

I really hope there will never be an option to use an online "ai" service directly. That sort of thing makes me worry about the privacy implications just from installing the software.

I second this request. I don't like AI invading all of the apps I like to use. Sumatra is by far my favorite PDF viewer. I use it 99% of the time. The version I have right now has everything I want and nothing I don't in a PDF viewer and I have much respect for the developer but please don't force users to have to integrate AI.

I mean that it is possible to have more choices in the models, because I have login in the codex cli as a subscriber of OpenAI , so why the default models in the sidebar only have the last version gpt5.5 instead of advanced model like 5.6”

Tracking this as #5837. Codex exposes the models available to the currently signed-in user through its model/list app-server request, so the sidebar can discover newer models such as GPT-5.6 and fall back to its built-in list if discovery fails.

What's the point of requesting ppl to translate only to have AI replacing them? Plus i just saw what was done to my work in the translations and i dont like it. My work was replaced with words of some unknown language. Basically you threw all our HARD WORK in the thrash.

@kjk This is in response to letting Claude ETC loose like a cannon in the good translations by humans that KNOW how to transliterate local dialects

@Felipefpl sorry about that, which language and which translations are you talking about?

The reality is that translations were lagging by a large amount, especially now that I'm adding a lot of new features / new strings.

AI only translates the strings that were not translated. It should never over-write existing (human) translation.

Can you point to a human translation that was over-written?

Note: sometimes I might rename a string which makes it a new translation.

So if you correct AI translation, it'll remain corrected and should not be over-written.

AI basically provides "better than nothing" translation.

Brazilian portuguese translation is the translation affected (multiple strings affected). Better to revert to what was there before, regarding the translations it's better to remove outdated translations like other programs do. Better than see some AI translated garbage.

I've improved https://www.apptranslator.org/app/SumatraPDF/pt to show who made an edit. I don't see any translations over-written by ai, but they might be over-written by other people.

I've also added a bulk edit mode which makes editing translations much faster.

The link redirected to me Portuguese - Portugal translation.. Below is an example of string that was wrongly translated by the AI.

The language seems one of the east europe. Not brazilian portuguese at all. There are multiple strings like that.

Is there a way to get the old translations back? In case this isnt possible i wont contribute to this project anymore. There is no reason to do this if all our work is going to thrash.

As previously explained, I don't believe any translation was over-written so I don't know what you're asking for.

The string "Acess denied" was translated as "Moned nac'het" which ARE NOT BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE WORDS. Several entries are like that. I'm talking about strings that were already translated before DAMN AI came in.

@kjk it is obvious Claude has over written existing entries for example ToC was correctly set by Marcellomco to Index but Claude seems to have gone walk about with nonsense all over that

You're welcome. It's fixed. I'd like to request something to make translators' life easier:

Could you please make it possible to edit/save the translated strings without reloading the page? Every time we save our changes the page reloads and we start from the top of the page, it would be MUCH BETTER if the page didnt reload while we stay in the same place where the original strings are.

Did you try "Bulk Edit Translations" (link at the top)? It's meant to edit multiple strings at once and submit once, which should be must faster
