From 9e341be755a0fbb4daae19ea5012f9c3e0d2fadf Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: jackaldenryan Date: Fri, 14 Aug 2026 17:52:43 -0500 Subject: [PATCH] Distinguish explicit from implicit preferences when writing memory (v0.2.9). A one-off edit request inside a specific piece of work was being stored as a standing rule, so unrelated future work inherited a preference the user never stated. Implicit requests now stay qualified to what was asked and the situation it happened in, and only apply when the current work resembles that scenario. Distinguish how the user expressed the preference before writing. + +**Explicit** — the user states a standing preference or rule ("Never use em dashes in my writing", "Always use British spelling"). Store it as a general preference. + +**Implicit** — the user asks for a change in a specific piece of work without framing it as a general rule ("Get rid of the em dashes" on this draft). Store what they asked for and the scenario — e.g. "The user asked to remove the em dashes from the [subject/topic] email draft" — not a standing preference like "The user prefers no em dashes in emails/writing". Implicit memories are still useful as soft signals; they must stay qualified to the situation. + +Only promote an implicit signal to an explicit preference when the user later states it as a standing rule, or repeats the same request across enough separate situations that a generalization is clearly warranted.
