Lacking documentation of Debian qualifiers of the images (was "docker-php-ext-install imap"-issue before)

For a few days now i am unable to build an image based on php:8.2-fpm with imap support.

Up to now i used to have the following Dockerfile:

Recent builds are failing due to "E: Unable to locate package libc-client-dev".
Why is there a dedicated 8.2-fpm-trixie image if the 8.2-fpm also uses the trixie repository?

Prior to the release of Debian Trixie, 8.2-fpm was Debian Bookworm (which is now in 8.2-fpm-bookworm).

Those are two tags for the exact same image.

We only support php images on two suites of Debian at a time. As we have in the past (#1190, #1416) and now (#1596), we move to the newest Debian release and drop the oldest. This also means that image tags without a Debian suite qualifier (e.g., php:8.2-fpm or php:8.2-apache) move to the newest release.

I'd recommend not using tags without a Debian suite qualifier (-bookworm and -trixie) since then you can control when a major OS version bump happens for you. The plain tags will change again in a few years when Debian Forky is released. We maintain php images on the two most recent releases of Debian so that users have time to migrate.

I agree - most likely it's the same issue as #1607 .
Still i find this very poorly documented.

The only reference on the hub is like

Some of these tags may have names like bookworm or trixie in them

No other references or suggestions that the "-fpm" without debian qualifier is "unstable".

Maybe we can discuss about the documentation about that fact instead.

I was trying to find a suitable replacement for the missing libc-client-dev, but its source package was removed for the Trixie release for being unmaintained (both in Debian and any upstream). So, I think it isn't possible without building it yourself (libc-client2007e-dev).

Ah, i see - so basically the imap extension is deprecated. So basically switch to some other library like https://github.com/Webklex/php-imap/tree/master.
